This piece explores the relationship between patina, decay, monumentality, and movement, questioning what makes an object read as a monument and how its identity changes through displacement, use, and transformation. The pipe becomes both an industrial remnant and a sculptural signifier.
By presenting a disfigured, fragmented pipe, the work reconsiders the idea of the “movable monument.” Rather than representing a singular icon of a thing, it’s representing habit. I was also interested in playing with the idea of a glorified icon of this object. The pipe is elevated from its ordinary position, almost like a nail on a wall—in other words, a bullseye.
